這首英文民謠可追溯自中古時代後期，在當時Scarborough 是個海邊渡假聖地，對全英國商人來說，是個主要集合地點。這首歌由吟遊人所唱，他們唱過一鎮又一個鎮，當聽到一首歌，帶往下一個小鎮吟唱時歌曲與編曲也往往跟著改變。

也因此今日的Scarborough fair 這首歌有許多版本，歌曲內容包括了許多朗朗上口且傳頌街頭巷尾的詩句。
